Our class's first field trip was to Tate Modern, London's main public art museum featuring modern and contemporary works. Tate has grown since the late 19th century into four museums, together holding Britain's extensive collection of art from the UK and around the world. Tate Modern features works from 1900 to the present. While museums commonly display works chronologically or by style, this museum displays its permanent collection in rotating exhibits curated around themes.
Led by Ben Street, our visit focused on works from 1945-1960 in the Making Traces exhibit, including Abstract Expressionist works by Philip Guston and Joan Mitchell, as well as Pop Art by Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Jasper Johns.
There is way too much in the museum to see or appreciate in a day, so I will definitely return for another look around!
